Thank Sen. Jeanne Shaheen for Supporting Medicare for All!

As we continue to resist current Republican efforts to undermine and destabilize the ACA, make massive cuts to Medicaid in the FY 2018 budget, privatize the VA, and voucherize Medicare, we also need to forward an alternative vision for our health care system.

The Medicare for All Act articulates such a vision and recognizes the fundamental principle that if Americans are to truly possess the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, then they must also possess a right to comprehensive health care.

Thank Sen. Jeanne Shaheen for being one of the 15 co-sponsors of Sen. Bernie Sanders' Medicare for All legislation!

Thank you Senator Shaheen for Championing Our Health Care!

Dear Senator Shaheen,

Today, it is with great relief and enthusiasm that we thank you for seizing the historic opportunity to finally make health care a human right in our country. Your work against this summer’s Congressional Republican assault on health care helped protect health care for hundreds of thousands in our state and millions of other Americans. As individual Granite Staters and organizations, we are now so excited to see that you are also supporting national legislation that will permanently guarantee health care for all by  co-sponsoring  Senator Bernie Sanders'sMedicare for All Act of 2017.

The Medicare for All Act could not come at a better time. While, with your help, we successfully defeated the Congressional GOP attacks on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and Medicaid, we know more work is required to protect the health care Americans currently have and expand and improve access for millions more. The ACA marked a step forward for American health care,  but it still left 28 million Americans uninsured, and we have seen a sharp rise in limited networks, high-deductible plans, and other barriers to care for those who are insured.

In turn, as we continue to resist current Republican efforts to undermine and destabilize the ACA, make massive cuts to Medicaid in the FY 2018 budget, privatize the VA, and voucherize Medicare, we also need to forward an alternative vision for our health care system. The Medicare for All Act articulates such a vision and recognizes the fundamental principle that if Americans are to truly possess the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, then they must also possess a right to comprehensive health care.

Despite the current partisan climate,  Americans across the political spectrum currently support federally funded universal health care in unprecedented numbers. Medicare for All is not only the most ethical option on the table, but also the most pragmatic and economically sustainable. Support for the House bill, the Expanded and Improved Medicare for All Act (H.R. 676) has surged to 117 cosponsors, or nearly three-fifths of Democratic members of the House. We thank you for joining your Democratic colleagues in the House by supporting  health care for all in the Senate.

We also call on our Governor Chris Sununu to follow  your example of principled commitment to protecting and prioritizing the health and well-being of all Granite Staters by also standing up for national Medicare for All.  We ask Gov. Sununu to take action in support of a bill that will improve the lives of  his constituents in New Hampshire and people across this nation. Gov. Sununu has an opportunity to urge and organize his fellow governors—both Republican and Democratic alike—to marshal their considerable influence at the federal level on behalf of meaningful health care reform that will benefit us all. We hope Gov. Sununu will do so immediately.

As our Senator, we thank you for your leadership in defending of our health care over the past several months and joining Granite Staters in the continued fight to build a health care system that puts patients and families over profits.

Guaranteeing high quality health care as a human right is a moral imperative and, with your co-sponsorship of the Medicare for All Act of 2017, we look forward to working with you on our state’s commitment to creating just, equitable, and healthy communities for all of us.

Sincerely,

Rights & Democracy

It is important to note that, at present, Medicare does a very bad job of covering mental health services, and that will need to be fixed.
